The St. Clair County Sheriff's Office Project Lifesaver Program helps provide a quicker response to save lives and reduce the potential for serious injury for adults and children who wander due to Alzheimer's, autism, down syndrome, dementia, and other related cognitive conditions. This is accomplished through the use of specialized electronic search and rescue equipment, technology, and procedures, as well as communication skills dealing with people afflicted with cognitive conditions. It is designed to save lives and "bring loved ones home". When searching for loved ones that have these conditions every minute lost increases the risk of a tragic outcome. Without this Project Lifesaver technology searches can involve multiple agencies, countless man-hours, and thousands of dollars and are very difficult to conduct promptly.
Citizens who are enrolled in Project Lifesaver wear a small personal transmitter around the wrist or ankle that emits an individualized tracking signal. If an enrolled citizen goes missing, their caregiver notifies the Sheriff's Office, and a trained Deputy Sheriff responds to the area in which they wandered. Most who wander are found within a few miles of their home, and search times can be greatly reduced.
